Anemia infecciosa equina: epizootiologia, prevencao e controle no Pantanal. Infoteca-e

Biometric parameters of adult and growing Pêga donkeys R. Bras. Zootec.
Moreira,Camilla Garcia; Menezes,Madalena Lima; Nunes,Tamires Romão; Mota,Thais Pagotti; Balieiro,Júlio Cesar de Carvalho; Oliveira,Chiara Albano de Araujo; Brandi,Roberta Ariboni.
ABSTRACT This study aimed at establishing the morphological characteristics and morphometric indexes of Pêga donkeys, utilizing 47 animals, of which 22 were adults and 25 were growing donkeys. Prior to taking their measurements, the animals were restrained and made to stand squarely. The morphological data were measured, and the following morphometric indexes were determined: body index (BI), meloscopic index (MI), dactylothoracic index (DTI), weight in cannon index (WCI), conformation index (CFI), and real live weight (RLW). The experimental design was subdivided into plots and repeated in time, in which the animals represented the plot and the data collection times were the subplots. No sex effect was noted for the morphological measurements and...

Bloat and colic in horses experimentally induced by the ingestion of Panicum maximum cv. ‘Mombaça’ Ciência Rural
Cerqueira,Valíria Duarte; Riet-Correa,Gabriela; Duarte,Marcos Dutra; Oliveira,Carlos Alberto de; Riet-Correa,Franklin.
In the Amazon region, sprouting pastures of Panicum maximum cause colic and death in horses and mules. To produce the disease two experiments were performed with growing P. maximum cv. 'Mombaça' in penned horses. In Experiment 1, at the beginning of the raining season, 10 horses were fed with recently harvested sprouting P. maximum. Two horses showed colic on the 5th and 11th day after start of the ingestion. In Experiment 2, also during the raining season, the same 10 horses used in Experiment 2 were divided into two groups of 5 horses each. Group 1 received sprouting P. maximum immediately after harvested and Group 2 received the grass 24 hours after harvested. The control group consisted of four animals which were placed in individual pens and fed with...

Feral Horse Social Stability In Tornquist Park, Argentina Mastozool. neotrop.
Scorolli,Alberto L; Lopez Cazorla,Andrea C.
Feral horses (Equus ferus caballus) exhibit harem defense polygyny, and harem-bands are generally considered to be social units stable in time. We studied an unmanaged feral horse population with very high density and few predators in Tornquist Provincial Park, Argentina. Horses were observed on a fixed route 20 km long that covered the entire study area. The horses were individually identified based on coat color and characteristic marks on face and legs. Data on social group composition was taken monthly from 1995 to 1997, seasonally from 1998 to 2000, and monthly from 2000 to 2003. We calculated the percent of harem-bands formed and dissolved, the percent of adult female change and stallion tenure. Social stability was lower than previously reported,...

The nomenclature of the African wild ass Naturalis
Groves, C.P.; Smeenk, C..
The 19th-century reports on the occurrence and identity of wild asses in North-East Africa are reviewed, as well as the names applied in various publications by Fitzinger and von Heuglin, respectively. The first published name for the African wild ass, Asinus africanus Fitzinger, 1858, is a nomen nudum. The name Equus taeniopus von Heuglin, 1861 is rejected as indeterminable, as it is based on an animal that cannot be identified and may have been a hybrid between a domestic donkey and a Somali wild ass; the type has not been preserved. The first available name thus becomes Asinus africanus von Heuglin & Fitzinger, 1866. A lectotype is designated: a skull of an adult female collected by von Heuglin near Atbara River, Sudan, and present in the Museum für...
